The Mýrdalsjökull icecap and glacier covers Katla, an active volcano in southern Iceland. The glacier carries tons of volcanic debris away from Katla. This debris forms a lacework of fine detail as the ice on the face of the glacier melts. Due to volcanic heat, from time to time huge glacial floods, called jökulhlaups, are released from the glacier, and the combination of flood water and volcanic debris wipes out anything in its path.
